Project 4 - Kasey Myers

1. Which blend modes did you experiment with and then use in your project?

I used soft light and overlay in this project. I also found one called Linear Burn that I really like but the image ended up being too dark for this project. It maybe for the next one though.

2. How did you use the stacking order to produce your final results in your most complex composite?

It was kind of nice with the leaf. It looked great as soon as I dropped it into the image, I just had to change the stacking order to tuck it behind the text but leave it on top of the photograph.

3. What layer effects did you use? Which layer styles did you apply to another layer?

I used opacity, drop shadow, stroke, and outer glow. I used drop shadow and stroke together on a lot.

4. What key elements of layer managements in this module that you plan to use in future projects?

I plan to use most of them. It will of course depend on what type of projects we do, but I can see them all having a lot of future use. (definitely going to try to get the Linear Burn in there somewhere).

5. What challenges did you experience in the process?

Not wanting to do everything the assignment called for. I got to the very end and realized I hadn't done anything with opacity yet. I didn't want to change any of my pictures to add it. I finally decided on the date in the Year of the Dragon picture.

6. What keyboard shortcuts are you using regularly now?

Still a lot of the same. I'm trying to use ctrl d more. But I use ctrl shift i a lot more. I still use ctrl shift c but I'm trying to get out of that habit and actually use the cropping tool.

7. Add link of your completed web page to your blog

And here's my link! I think I've finally decided on a color scheme for my site. I don't expect it to change again.

I am not a graphic artist, that's for sure. I can look at a well done image and appreciate the quality but am unable to reproduce that quality myself. Consequently, my images are rather pedestrian in comparison.

Of the images I produced this week, I would say this is probably the best of them. I think if I were do make any changes it would be to increase the size of the canvas, allowing blank space around the larger images and keeping the corners of the smaller images intact.

Now, on to the mandatory questions and answers:

1) I experimented with a number of blend modes but didn't care for the results of most of them, at least in the context of the images I was working on. The one that had the most obvious and interesting results was the linear dodge.

2) I used stacking order (along with some judicious duplicating and chopping) to create the overlapping. affect in the image. Placing one image "above" or "below" an image that had a interactive blend (such as the linear dodge) dictated how (or if) that blend interacted with an overlapping element.

3) I used a lot of drop shadows and traces. And I did quite a bit of drop & copy.

4) Probably the biggest layer tool is proper naming, especially when dealing with layers which have small elements on them that do not show up distinctly in the layer thumbnail. I will definitely work on keeping layers well named.

5) My biggest challenge is still my selection technique and quality.

6) Control-Delete is a favorite.

The link to my Project 4 page is here and the above photo. I also have begun keeping a general index page up dated and that can be found here.

Project 3 - Richard Peterson

1. Which selection tools did you think worked best for specific types of elements in an image?

The quick selection tool worked best for me on just about all the images.

2. What tools and strategies that you used to create your simple composite will you use in future projects?

I will definitely duplicate images in succession to create labels or logo.

3. In this module, you created the transparent images. How do you believe these images will be used in your future web design projects? What file type did you save you transparent images as?
I will most likely use transparent images, I have been waiting a long time on how to use them properly. I saved most of my images as gif.

4. What challenges did you experience in the process?

While using the magnetic tool, it sometimes goes off the reservation.
5. What keyboard shortcuts are you using regularly now?

I am using ctrl+j(duplicate layer), d(delsect) shift+i(inverse selection)

1. I liked the magnetic lasso tool the best to select images.
2. I will use the tool the will work best for the project at hand. Each tool has a time and a place to be used.
3. The transparent background will work great when combining two or more images together. I saved everything as a .jpg.
4. The biggest challenge I was having was with dreamweaver to make my webpage.
5. Control D to deselect and control S to save.

Allan Wakefield Project 3

1. My favorite was the circle marquee tool while holding shift to get the eyeball, that was the easiest one. I like the quick selection tool, because you can continually add and subtract portions till it looks good. Note: I Had to zoom in real close and use a 1px brush to get some areas from mass selecting.

2. Holding alt while using the move tool to copy an image is super awesome amazing. Trying to copy and paste is time consuming and it takes up memory so now my poor laptop will get a break.

3. There are endless way to use transparent images, for example in a job I did recently I designed some buttons for a friend, and for several of them I used a transparent png. I am unsure whether I am going to use gif’s or png’s because I want to do some more googlin.

4. The ladybugs feet threw me for a loop, I finally ended up using the polygontool to select the bottom part creating a large circle over the top of the bug, and using the quick selection tool for the part above the image.

5. Alt-clicking, free transform (alt+t), navigate tools (shift+shortcut), and my favorite ctrl+s. I also used tab to hide the tool menus.

Aldin's Project 3

1. Which selection tools did you think worked best for specific types of elements in an image?

I think the magnetic tool worked the best if you zoom in during the hard parts.

2. What tools and strategies that you used to create your simple composite will you use in future projects?

I used the magnetic and the magic wand tool. Those are the 2 that I go to the most to get selections right.

3. In this module, you created the transparent images. How do you believe these images will be used in your future web design projects? What file type did you save you transparent images as?

I think saving them as .png is useful for items such as logos or designer accents

4. What challenges did you experience in the process?

The magnetic tool found that everything was its friend and at some times would stick itself to items that made me restart a couple of times

5. What keyboard shortcuts are you using regularly now?

the m, v, z, alt+T (free transform) were the tools I used the most

Thomas Del Greco - Project 3

1. Which selection tools did you think worked best for specific types of elements in an image?

Quick select and the magnetic lasso were the most useful!

2. What tools and strategies that you used to create your simple composite will you use in future projects?

Quick select and the magic wand are wonderful. I also really like the alt + move tool combo to duplicate selections, very useful. Inverse select is very useful in general.

3. In this module, you created the transparent images. How do you believe these
images will be used in your future web design projects? What file type did you save
your transparent images as?

I saved the transparent images as pngs. I think these sort of images will be very important as we work more with layers, as they go on a new layer smoothly.

4. What challenges did you experience in the process?

I just found this assignment difficult because there were so many aspects to it: book lesson, blog post, web page, project itself, and discussion. Whew! It was quite a bit to juggle.

5. What keyboard shortcuts are you using regularly now?

Crl+D and Z are my main ones.

Annie Church - Project 3

My Composite Final

1. Which selection tools did you think worked best for specific types of elements in an image?

I liked the quick selections tool the best, it works on most things easily.

2. What tools and strategies that you used to create your simple composite will you use in future projects?

I will use them all, they are all tools that would be used regularly.

3. In this module, you created the transparent images. How do you believe these images will be used in your future web design projects? What file type did you save you transparent images as?

I saved them as "png" and they can be used on a web page by layering on top of other images.

4. What challenges did you experience in the process?

It took me a while to see what the best tool would be for each picture.

5. What keyboard shortcuts are you using regularly now?

control: X, C, V, and A

Alex Watson-Project 3

1. My favorite tool was the magic wand. It was very simple and fast to select an image. The round images were very easy to select with the eliptical tool.

2. I will use the duplicate tool with the moving tool. Being able to duplicate so easy and being able to select each image and layering it.

3. The transparent images can be put into other images without a background. I saved the transparent images as gif files.

4. The challenges I faced during this module were finding the right tool to select the images and still keeping the quality of the image.

5. The Keyboard shortcuts I use a lot now are CTRL+backspace to delete the background and also CTRL+D to deselect images that I am done editing or I made a mistake on.

"Which selection tools did you think worked best for specific types of elements in an image?"

Most of the images I have to work with in this class are your typical "family snapshots". As much as I would like to be a "photographer", I am not. Consequently, my impression of the selection tools will probably not be typical of what might occur in the "real world" of higher end photo editing.

Keeping this context in mind, I am not all that impressed with the magic wand. Family snapshots often are a swirl of colors rather than having large expanses of a solid or near-solid color. Quick select is handy although, again, in snapshot type images there may be similar tones adjacent to each other which will require some touching up. The lasso can be useful for that, although it does take a steady hand and perhaps some rather extreme zooming.

"What tools and strategies that you used to create your simple composite will you use in future projects?"

Lots of practice. The basics of a composite are not that difficult, it is the fine tuning--the seamless blending of images--which is the real art and that is just gonna take time and practice.

"In this module, you created the transparent images. How do you believe these images will be used in your future web design projects?"

It will be useful for headers, logos, and other graphic elements that I want to appear on the page background rather than having it's own background.

"What file type did you save your transparent images as?" PNG

"What challenges did you experience in the process?"

The single biggest challenge was simply getting the selections correct and to my liking. Well, maybe finding a photo to use was my biggest challenge. It would be a photo-finish between those two things as the biggest challenge.

"What keyboard shortcuts are you using regularly now?"

Well, certainly not Option-X to clear the background. I don't know if that is an error in the instructions or if I was just having an issue, but I had to use Command-X to clear the background.

The link to my Project 3 page is here and the above photo. I also have begun keeping a general index page up dated and that can be found here.

Project 3- Jessica Gregoire

1. Which selection tools did you think worked best for specific types of elements in an image?
Depending on the image, it varied. I think quick select and magic wand are the two quickest tools to use. Using these tools is easiest when there is a very simple background to work with. I also like the magnetic lasso-- it seemed to know the natural edges of most objects I tried to select.
2. What tools and strategies that you used to create your simple composite will you use in future projects?
I used a color overlay that gave my composite a vintage look (see above). I was surprised by the result, but really like how it turned out. I am interested to see how the other tools work in future projects.
3. In this module, you created the transparent images. How do you believe these images will be used in your future web design projects? What file type did you save your transparent images as?
I save my transparent images as pngs. I saved all my images as pngs because they seemed to yield the quickest load speeds without sacrificing image quality.I'm not sure how I will use these images, but they might be good on a background or logo in the future.
4. What challenges did you experience in the process?
I assumed quick select would be the easiest way to select items, but I found that magic wand and the magnetic lasso were just as effective. Once I was more flexible on this, it accurate selecting became much easier. Using the inverse property ended up being really helpful in most cases.
5. What keyboard shortcuts are you using regularly now?
Control backspace to change the background color and alt to select a color for brush fill. Those two shortcuts are real timesavers.

Project 3 - Kasey Myers

1. Which selection tools did you think worked best for specific types of elements in an image?

I generally use the Magnetic Lasso, regular Lasso, and the Magic Wand. I might use the Quick Select more often now, but I find I get enough flexibility from the previously mentioned ones.

2. What tools and strategies that you used to create your simple composite will you use in future projects?

The primary one that I can foresee using is the Move Tool and the arrows. I imagine we'll be moving things around a lot in future lessons. Other than that I imagine the select tools will be needed in various formats.

3. In this module, you created the transparent images. How do you believe these images will be used in your future web design projects? What file type did you save your transparent images as?

I saved my files as gif to begin with but then I realized we needed to do a drop shadow. If you save as gif the drop shadow is no longer transparent so I saved it as png. I know that layers are a big part of photoshop so I expect we'll use transparency in a lot of ways.

4. What challenges did you experience in the process?

Refining my selects. The Quick Select seems to leave ragged edges. I've said it before, and this activity made it more true. I want a tablet.

5. What keyboard shortcuts are you using regularly now?

ctrl d

ctrl shift alt s

ctrl alt i

and of course the standard ctrl c, v, x

Project 2 - Richard Peterson

Using camera raw was pretty cool and I have learned a number of things.

What guided how you cropped your images? Explain your intention.
I cropped my images based on the images around them, and by the size of what a card would look like.

How did you use content-aware in modifying your images?
I used content aware by getting rid of the most recognizable logo in one of my pictures. The image came out ok, but since the design was a little slanted, some defects still can be seen.

In what way did the clone stamp tool assist you to modify your images?
The clone stamp helped me duplicate the grass in the above image with ease. It amazed me sometimes how the picture looked after using this tool.

How would you use these tools in future projects?
I will use these tools to take certain parts of an image out of a picture, restore an old picture, and duplicate other parts of pictures or photos.

Lucia Shelton - Project 2

1. What was your experience in using Camera Raw to correct color in your images?

It made everything a lot easier than it would have been in photoshop, I really like it.

2. What guided how you cropped your images? Explain your intention.

I cropped out extraneous objects that took away from the aesthetic value of each picture.

3. How did you use content-aware in modifying your images?

I used it to take out unwanted objects, plants, car etc.

4. In what way did the clone stamp tool assist you to modify your images?

It helped a lot for the places content aware didn't get right and I used it once instead of content aware to remove an object.

5. How would you use these tools in future projects?
I will definitely use the clone stamp and content aware together again. Cropping and straightening always comes in handy too.

Alex Watson-Project 2

1. I had a very good time using camera raw. I learned a lot about how to improve an images color and make it look the way you want it to

2. I planned to cut out parts of the picture that took away from it. I cropped out heads and people that just made the image busy.

3. Content aware was definately my favorite tool. To think how important and useful that tool is and how easy it is to use it. I used it like crop but was able to keep the better parts of the image.

4. It helped me modify my images by fixing dark spots and making the image clearer for the viewer. Being able to take little objects out or shadow really makes an image better.

5. I can use these tools to get the parts out of images that I like but get rid of parts that I also don't care for but still keeping the whole image instead of cropping.

*for some reason my page when i put it up had my css styles page connected to it and now for some reason it isn't. I will fix it ASAP

Thomas Del Greco - Project 2

1. What was your experience in using Camera Raw to correct color in your images?

It's a really nice feature, much easier than trying to dig around Photoshop for the same tools.

2. What guided how you cropped your images? Explain your intention.

I cropped them to focus on the subject of the photos.

3. How did you use content-aware in modifying your images?

Similar to the clone stamp tool, I used content aware to weed out annoying little spots that had gotten into the images.

4. In what way did the clone stamp tool assist you to modify your images?

Most of the pictures I was correcting had little spots ruining the image from age or from how they were taken. The clone stamp tool and content aware were integral in weeding those out!

5. How would you use these tools in future projects?

I feel more confident with them, but there's much more I need to explore!

Jacob Meyer Project 2

1. What was your experience in using Camera Raw to correct color in your images?
I really like camera raw. It makes white balancing the same as iPhoto on my mac. Its something I'm already familiar with so it was easy to make the transition!

2. What guided how you cropped your images? Explain your intention.
My crops were based off of image framing. Most of the pictures were images of art i have done, so the cropping was pretty straightforward. When I'm not cropping a painting, I like to consider composition in my crops. I like to look for lines that will lead a viewer through the image.

3. How did you use content-aware in modifying your images?
It was nice to see how intelligently it could edit through a lot of noise in my second image, a graphite drawing.

4. In what way did the clone stamp tool assist you to modify your images?
I had already used the clone stamp before. It can be a struggle to use for larger areas though. When i have some quick touch up i have to make I usually go for the clone stamp.

5. How would you use these tools in a future assignment?
I'm sure I will be using these tools a lot in future assignments. "Saving for the web" is a feature ill be using a ton from now on. It makes it so easy to figure out how big the image is going to be so you can size it accordingly. I also like the ruler tool and perspective-correcting crops. these are things i will be using a lot in the future

I really enjoyed using Camera Raw for correcting color. It was so quick in comparison to opening Photoshop and going through all of the steps there.
When cropping my images my intentions were to crop out any extra information from the photo, yet still trying to create some kind of visual stability.
I used content-aware in all of my edited photos. I really enjoyed this tool, and found it extremely easy and speedy when using the quick selection tool. I applied this tool to edit out people, trees, telephone poles, and more.
The clone tool came in handy in areas of photos that had the same textures and colors, for example the sky, water, or textiles.
I would use these tools in the future the same way I used them on this project. I found them very useful and functional for editing photos.

"What was your experience in using Camera Raw to correct color in your images?"

Since I have never really done much "image correction" I really have no substantial experience with which to make a comparison. It seemed to do a decent job and was fairly easy to use.

"What guided how you cropped your images? Explain you intention."

I know about the "rule of thirds" and try to keep it in mind when I crop but I don't let it force me into a crop I don't like. Mostly, I just try to keep the image "balanced": subject slightly off center and something to balance the image in the area on the opposite side, even if it is just a mass of color. I let my tastes be my guide mostly. Like the ol' Rick Nelson song, you can't please everyone so you got to please yourself.

"How did you use content-aware in modifying your images?"

Very carefully. I discovered that in busy images, the best tactic is to copy/move the element you need to use as your source to a new layer, hid the other layers, then content fill the desired area. This helps avoid "content-aware" from using unwanted portions of you image as seed material for it's function.

"In what way did the clone stamp tool assist you to modify your images?"

It seems to work best in bland areas which do not have a lot of contrasting detail but which perhaps have an edge or one particular detail you need to duplicate, extend, or what have you.

"How would you use these tools in future projects?"

As best I could.

The link to my Project 2 page is here and the above photo. I also have begun keeping a general index page up dated and that can be found here.

Jessica Gregoire- Project 2

1. What was your experience in using Camera Raw to correct color in your images?
I love Camera Raw for this purpose! It was so easy to use. A lot of photos that I thought were worthless have been reformatted thanks to Camera Raw.

2. What guided how you cropped your images? Explain your intention.
Mostly I just tried to cropped based on the focal point of the image. Some images I chose to not crop just so I could play with the tools a little more to remove people, objects, etc.

3. How did you use content-aware in modifying your images?
I used this more than the clone stamp tool. I found it easy to select the portion of the image I wanted to remove and click "content-aware" to remove the item highlighted. This helped get rid distracting and unnecessary elements within a photo.

4. In what way did the clone stamp tool assist you to modify your images?
I used the clone stamp on the flag pole in the picture of the Empress hotel. This is helpful if the background is more complicated (content-aware will fill with surrounding pixels, which may not match-- there is more flexibility with clone stamp to choose how to fill the empty space).

5. How would you use these tools in a future assignment?
I think these tools are great for working with pictures. I have never considered myself a very good photographer, but I can now imagine myself cropping, recoloring and editing photos.

Using Camera Raw was great, it brightened the colors and seemed to make it more focused.

When cropping photos I took out unwanted objects used cropping to enhance the composition of the photo.

I used content aware to cover up unwanted objects and to hide imperfections in the photo.

The clone stamp was used to make expand textured areas and hide ugly background noise.

I will use these tools to enhance photos and make them more visually pleasing.

1. What was your experience in using Camera Raw to correct color in your images?

I enjoyed using it, since editing is much easier and faster.

2. What guided how you cropped your images? Explain your intention.

I cropped out unwanted and/or ugly parts in order to enhance my photos.

3. How did you use content-aware in modifying your images?

I used it to remove a few unwanted parts of my images, such as the bottle and the branches.

4. In what way did the clone stamp tool assist you to modify your images?

It was very useful in the "tiles" picture to add more of the tiles to fill in after I used the ruler tool and the crop tool.

5. How would you use these tools in future projects?

I will feel more creative now that I am aware of more tools and their uses.

Project 2 - Kasey Myers

1. What was you experience in using Camera Raw to correct color in your images?

It was really nice to be able to mass change my images but then to go through and tweek individual ones to meet my needs. It seems very useful.

2. What guided how you cropped your images? Explain your intention.

The ruler option to crop and straighten at the same time was something new to me. It seems incredibl useful to use that instead of having to eyeball it.

3. How did you use content-aware in modifying your images?

I used the content aware brush to clean up the ground a lot (leaves and knots in the boards). I used the content aware fill to get rid of a firehydrant, a fense, and to fill in the background on a couple of images that I straightened.

4. In what way did the clone stamp tool assist you to modify your images?

I didn't use the clone tool much on this project. I had two spots that I used content-aware fill on and then used the clone tool to clean up things that I didn't like in the fill.

5. How would you use these tools in future projects?

I use the content aware brush all the time already. Any picture of me gets the blemishes before it sees the public light. I expect to use it along the same lines in the future.

1. What was you experience in using Camera Raw to correct color in your images?

This is my new preferred way of adjusting color. I like its non destructiveness, and how it transfers to Photoshop

2. What guided how you cropped your images? Explain your intention.

I try to make an aesthetically pleasing image, most of the time things that are centered look plain. I like to leave the focus off to the side for a more dynamic look. But that’s what I consider when I am taking pictures too.

3. How did you use content-aware in modifying your images?

I love this feature, you could call it magic-aware. How they come up with the algorithms to reproduce the complexity of some photographs is amazing.

4. In what way did the clone stamp tool assist you to modify your images?

I took out a sign on the Spain picture, fixed the roof, and repaired a bunch of damage I did with the band-aid tool. Then I used it to reinforce the wings on the Nimrod graphic.

5. How would you use these tools in future projects?

I would use them exactly how I used them for this assignment, however I hope to get better as I learn more and gain more experience.

Test post

I had fun creating these photos, especially the ones of my kids. There were no challenges, other then not sleeping. I would use these tools again in many other projects, like cool line art or unique highlights. I found some brushes available for free on the internet – I made sure the creator gave total free permission, because I don’t want to figure out whom to ask when I am using a brush set. I also used the magnetic marquee tool, and that was really neat! I don’t have a link to my slideshow because I don’t have bridge yet… later today I will update my post... better late then never,

1. Being able to select areas to color in to make sure you kept in inside the lines was what i found the most interesting

2. I found myself having to start over after not making layers on my images which was my biggest issue.

3.I'll use these tools in future projects to spice up back grounds and make things my own by putting my little spin on them.

1. What did you find the most interesting about using these features in Photoshop?
I think the thing I liked most was the versatility and ease of use. I'm not someone who has used Photoshop much in the past, but I thought it was easy to learn the basics. There are so many brush styles you can really customize your work.

2. What challenges did you experience in the process?
I need to learn more about each brush option to really fine tune my work. I found myself gravitating to the brushes I felt most comfortable with for most of the photos.

3. How would you use these tools in future projects?
I think once I become more proficient with Photoshop, I could use brush strokes to really define my graphic design and photo altering capabilities.

What did you find most interesting about using these features of Photoshop?
There are so many options for brushes! I liked that I learned to better organize my panels and that the 'history' window makes undoing actions much less frustrating.

What challenges did you experience in the process?
The amount of options is incredibly overwhelming. I feel like if I want to enhance images it's going to take lots and lots of practice just to find the right brush for the right situation. Also, since this was the first project, it was a little bit of a struggle logging into the SWS server and all that.

How would you use these tools in future projects?
The brush tool is pretty essential in Photoshop, and I imagine it will be pretty helpful for designing web graphics. I plan to use my knowledge of organizing panels to create the perfect workspace.

What did you find most interesting about using these features of Photoshop?
   - I found there are many different things you can do to images and we have just started. Using the adjustments panel does a lot of things that I would have otherwise overlooked.

What challenges did you experience in the process?
   - I found I could really spend a whole lot of time trying to get a project just right, and there are so many possibilities, I could go on forever. Time is really crucial.

How would you use these tools in future projects?
   - I would use these tools when trying to create banners, ads, posters, etc. Headers for websites would be another use.

Project 1 - Kasey Myers

1. What did you find most interesting about using these features of Photoshop?

I'm not a big fan of the standard brushes. I like the crazy ones like the leaves and stars and I know there are plugins for things like clouds and hair.

The alteration I like the best was playing with curves on my seaweed picture. But then I realized I needed to brush it for the project.

2. What challenges did you experience in the process?

Lack of a steady hand using a mouse. I want a Wacom tablet (or something similar) so bad. I've used one once, and it was so much easier than using a mouse.

3. How would you use these tools in future projects?

I think the brush tools will be used the most for cleanup or filling in spaces with solid colors.

I found it interesting that you can customize every detail of the brush tool. It was fun creating different textures, and varying the opacity.

I seemed to be challenged with my initial control over the different tools, while using a mouse.

I would use these different tools in future projects to emphasize different elements of a photograph. I look forward to trying to use more of a realistic emphasis on these projects.

I tried to upload the PSD version but Google rejected it for some reason, so I'm stuck with uploading a JPG version. Also, the original image was rather large and in reducing it I notice some resolution problems.

I wouldn't say I am necessarily hugely in love with any of the photo's I 'brushed' but I think this is the best of them. It is the one that looks like it wasn't brushed."

1. "What did you find most interesting about using these features of Photoshop?"

Generally, you can't make them look unmanipulated unless you are perhaps just doing specific touch-ups..

"2. What challenges did you experience in the process?"

Making them not only look somewhat natural but making them blend well.

"3. How would you use these tools in future projects?"

Give me some time to think about that one.

Lets get it started...

I am ready to start blowing the minds of individuals.
